Institutional flow in AMD netted $34.8M bullish today, with heavy call buying in June 2027 strikes ranging from $650 to $910.
The Setup
AMD closed at $479 today with $34.8M in net bullish premium hitting the tape. The bulk of that flow isn't chasing near term catalysts. It's concentrated in June 2027 LEAPS, where traders are paying up for strikes that sit 37% to 91% above current levels.
The stock is rebounding from a 6% weekly drawdown that pulled shares back from June's all time high near $585. Raymond James upgraded the name to Strong Buy this week with a $641 target, and Bank of America lifted its objective to $620 last month after AMD's Advancing AI event. The flow suggests someone agrees with the Street's bull case, but they're giving themselves 10 months of runway.
The Flow
The largest single print came through at the $650 strike for June 2027 expiry: $2.06M in premium marked as RepeatedHits, meaning the trade built over multiple fills rather than a single clip. That strike implies roughly 36% upside from here. Two smaller but notable prints hit the $830 and $910 strikes on the same expiry for $0.33M and $0.37M respectively, both tagged with descending fill patterns.
Closer in, the $540 October call drew $0.65M in premium through repeated hits. That's an 8 week expiry with the strike sitting 13% out of the money. More aggressive than the LEAPS, but still a clean directional bet if AMD can reclaim its June highs.
The near term action includes a $482.50 call expiring August 28 for $0.12M. That's essentially an at the money weekly, and it's a small notional bet. Treat it as noise.
Reading the Tape
Flow skews this heavy toward LEAPS calls usually signal one of two things: genuine directional conviction with long time horizons, or hedging short equity exposure. Given the strikes involved, the second scenario feels less plausible. You don't buy $830 calls to hedge. You buy $830 calls because you think AMD is going there.
The repeated hits pattern on the $650 strike is worth noting. That's not a single block order from a fund that knows exactly what it wants. It's accumulation, building size without moving markets too aggressively. Could be an institutional investor using algos to work into the position across fills.
There's also a small $430 September put for $0.27M. One protective put against a wall of calls doesn't change the read. It could be a hedge leg, or it could be someone playing for a short term pullback before earnings in November.
Context
AMD's fundamental story remains strong. The company reported Q2 revenue of $11.5 billion, up 50% year over year, driven by AI and data center demand. The Anthropic partnership announced in July for up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 GPUs gave the stock its last major catalyst.
Next earnings fall on November 3. The June 2027 LEAPS will capture two full earnings cycles and any developments from the company's expanding hyperscaler relationships with Microsoft and Anthropic. That's a long time for theta decay, but it's also a long time for AMD to deliver.
Bank of America's note after the Advancing AI event framed AMD as having transitioned from a merchant GPU vendor to a rack scale systems supplier. If that thesis plays out, the $620 to $650 range becomes achievable without heroic assumptions.
What Could Break the Thesis
The obvious risk is multiple compression if the AI spending cycle decelerates. AMD trades at 117x trailing earnings. That multiple holds up only if revenue growth persists. Any signal that hyperscaler capex is slowing, or that Nvidia is recapturing share, would hit the premium in these LEAPS hard.
Implied volatility on the long dated strikes is elevated given the AI narrative. If you're buying here, you're paying up. That's not necessarily wrong, but it does mean the underlying needs to move substantially for these trades to work.
Watch the $540 October strike. That's the nearest dated flow with meaningful size. If AMD can't reclaim $540 by October expiry, the LEAPS bulls will be sitting on paper losses even if their thesis is correct.
