What is stock seasonality?

Some stocks tend to do better in certain months year after year, because of things like holiday spending, budget cycles, weather or when a company reports. Seasonality looks at the same month across many years to find those patterns.

We rank by consistency first. A stock that rose in 9 of the last 10 Januarys tells you more than one that jumped 80% once and fell in the other years.

How to read the list

  • Up years: one bar per year, green when the stock finished January higher.
  • Average and median gain: the typical move for the month. The median ignores one big outlier year.
  • Best and worst: the range you could have seen in a single January.

January seasonality FAQ

What are the best stocks to buy in January?

This list ranks US stocks by how consistently they have risen in January over the last 10 years. 236 stocks rose in at least 8 of those 10 years. It shows past patterns only, and a stock that usually rises in January can still fall this year.

Is January a good month for stocks?

The S&P 500 rose in 7 of the last 10 Januarys.

How are the seasonality picks ranked?

By consistency first: the share of years in which the stock finished the month higher. Ties go to the higher median gain, so one unusually big year cannot carry a stock to the top. Stocks need at least 8 years of history for the 10 year view, and must trade above $5 with at least $2 million a day in volume.

How often is the list updated?

The history is refreshed at the start of each month. During the month, the "this month" column uses the latest prices.
