What a 13F filing tells you

Form 13F is the closest look the public gets at what hedge funds and other institutional investors own. Each quarter, every manager with more than $100 million in US stocks lists its positions: the stocks and ETFs, the number of shares, their value, and any put or call options.

Comparing a fund's filing with its last one shows what it bought, added to, trimmed and sold. Adding up every fund shows which stocks the smart money is moving into and out of, and how much of each company institutions own.

How to read the lists

  • Funds adding and cutting: how many funds hold more, or fewer, shares than last quarter.
  • New and sold out: funds that bought a stock for the first time, or sold all of it.
  • Net bought: the dollar value of all the buying minus all the selling, at quarter end prices.
  • Held by funds: the share of the company that 13F filers reported holding (institutional ownership).
  • Put/call ratio: the value of puts held against calls. Higher means more funds are positioned for a fall.

Hedge fund holdings and 13F FAQ

What is a 13F filing?

Form 13F is a quarterly report that large investment managers file with the SEC. It lists the US stocks, ETFs and some options and convertible bonds they held at the end of the quarter, with the number of shares and their value.

Who has to file a 13F?

Any institutional investment manager with at least $100 million in US listed stocks and other 13F securities. That includes hedge funds, mutual fund companies, pension funds, banks, insurers and family offices. About 9,000 managers file each quarter.

When are 13F filings due?

Within 45 days after each quarter ends: around February 14, May 15, August 14 and November 14 (the next business day when that falls on a weekend). Holdings as of Sep 30, 2026 are due by Nov 16, 2026. Most funds file in the last few days before the deadline.

How up to date are hedge fund holdings?

A 13F shows positions on the last day of the quarter, and funds have 45 days to file, so the holdings can be up to six weeks old when they appear. A fund may have changed its positions since then. We add each filing within minutes of it reaching the SEC.

What does a 13F not show?

Short positions, cash, bonds, most foreign stocks and private investments are not included. Some funds are allowed to keep a position confidential for a while and report it later in an amendment; we add those when they are filed.

What is institutional ownership?

The share of a company held by institutional investors. On each stock page we add up the shares reported by every 13F filer and divide by the shares outstanding. Index funds, banks and pension funds make up much of it, so high institutional ownership is normal for large companies.

How do you work out what hedge funds are buying?

We compare each fund's newest filing with its previous one. A fund is adding when it holds more shares than last quarter, cutting when it holds fewer, and new when it did not hold the stock before. Lists only count funds that have filed both quarters.

Why are market makers left out of the put/call ratio?

Market makers and bank trading desks hold large option positions to hedge their trading for clients, not as bets on the stock. Leaving them out gives a better read on how funds are positioned.

Is this free?

Yes. Everyone can see the filing season, the well known funds and the top of each list. A free account shows every list in full and the newest filings.

For informational and educational purposes only. Not investment advice, and not a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Holdings come from SEC Form 13F filings as reported by each manager and show positions at the end of the quarter, up to 45 days before the filing. Funds may have changed their positions since. Values are as reported; options are valued at the underlying shares.
